How to Run Segmentation Tree

Tip:
It's easy to get up to speed with MM4XL in a matter of seconds:

  1. Select the MM4XL tool you want to work with from the toolbar.
  2. Click the Example button on the form. This opens an example sheet with data for the tool you are using.
  3. With your mouse, select the data sets as explained in the example sheet, then click the OK button to print the report.

Segmentation Tree is simple to run. Click on the Segmentation Treebutton in the MM4XL floating toolbar:

The window below appears. This is the place where you define the basics of the analysis you want to run. Then click on OK, and that's it.

In the upper field, Input range, select with the mouse the area on the sheet where are stored the data concerning the profiles to be investigated (read more concerning input data later in the section Technicalities). In the Output range select the cell on the sheet where the tool can start printing the report of the analysis. From the list box Select criteria choose the discriminant criteria you want to run the analysis for (read more concerning input data later in the section Technicalities).

From the list box on the left side select with the mouse the Available factors you want to run the segmentation with and click on the Add>> button. The tool will partition all factors listed in the box Selected factors. Check Select all and click on Add>> to move all factors at once from the left to the right list box.

The checkbox Show item group number, active by default, prints in the first blank column on the right side of the input range the group number each item was assigned to.

Tip:
After the segments have been found, with the item group numbers available, use the tool CrossTab from MM4XL menu for making contingency tables that describe the items clustered in one group.

In the frame Tree check the boxes Show counts and Show % counts if you want the boxes in the tree chart to display how many individuals are assigned to each group and what their % size is. This is a very useful feature that makes trees rich in information or small in size depending on user needs. By default both check boxes Print table and Print tree chart are set to active. Remove the tick if you do not want to see them on sheet.

The default options in the frame Tree branches are set to display a full tree. However, the list box Branch(es) is used for drawing both sides of the tree or one of the left and right branches only. The list box N. of levels defines how many levels the tree shows and the Font size option allows rescaling the text in the chart. These options are intended to help users to draw readable trees, which in fact may become quite large when working with several variables.

The LearningCenter in the lower left corner of the form is where to open the MM4XL online Reference Manual, the Example sheet with test data, and other helpful utilities you can use for learning the tool.

Click on Finish and Segmentation tree will start printing.

Tip:
Depending on the amount of data you work with it may take from a few second to minutes to run the analysis. Look at the Excel status bar to confirm that the tool is still working.
